How to increase compliance training completion rates

How to increase compliance training completion rates

Trying to get teams to complete their compliance training is usually a battle of its own.

How many times have you faced conversations like:

We know these conversations can be exhausting, but for accountancy and legal teams, skipping training isn’t an option, so you need to do everything possible to encourage them to complete their compliance training.

Believe it or not, just saying that it is mandatory isn’t always a major motivator.

To get you started, here are a few tips from our experts to get those completion rates where they need to be.

Keep compliance courses short and simple

It’s pretty rare to meet anyone who loves a long course. Usually, they’re looking for ways to make it go faster.

Putting it on double speed, trying to skip to the end, have it playing in the background…we’ve seen it all.

Bite-sized sessions are usually the way to go. They slot into the busy days and give staff a sense of progress that keeps them motivated.

(Top tip – Small modules can be completed while you have your morning tea/coffee, waiting for the caffeine to kick in to get you through the day.)

Make it easy to follow

Never underestimate the value of training that’s easy to follow. Clear, simple language beats walls of text every time.

Your team are also more likely to remember what they’ve learned when it applies to scenarios they have experienced or will have to do later down the road.

Give control to your team

Flexible access helps staff fit learning around the day-to-day tasks. Mobile-friendly courses mean people can complete modules anywhere, at any time, removing unnecessary restrictions.

Training that adapts to their schedule gets done faster.

Choice matters too. While compulsory courses like Anti-Money Laundering or Cyber Awareness must be completed, giving staff the option to explore other topics helps them take ownership of their development and find more value in what they’re doing.

A few of the more popular development courses include management training, mentoring, client strategy and building your network. Basically, the kind of courses that will help them take their careers up another gear.

Listen to the feedback

While you’ll probably always face some individuals who hate compliance training, sometimes there’s a little more behind their disdain.

Maybe it’s the layout of the content or the pace of it that makes it frustrating for them to finish.

Try to find out what it is that is making them stall and find ways to improve their experience.

There are so many different ways to learn, from reading to listening to watching to doing a practical activity.

What works for one isn’t guaranteed to work for everyone, so make sure you have a variety of training resources to hand.

Lead by example

It’s been said that the most powerful leadership tool you have is your own personal example.

When leaders take courses first, they can support their teams and answer questions confidently, making sure everyone is on the same page.

Teams are far more likely to follow suit when they see managers taking training seriously.

Set clear deadlines with reminders

A big setback for improving compliance training completion rates is poor communication.

Without clear instructions of:

You’ll run into issues every time.

Without this key information, your team have room to make excuses of “oh, I didn’t realise that was for me” or empty promises of “yeah, I’ll get it done at some point”.

If you’re worried about having to give someone the responsibility of chasing their colleagues to get courses completed, automation may well be your saving grace.

We have a “nagware” feature for our training platform that will send out all the reminders on your behalf and automated workflows that will track and report everyone’s progress.

It may well be the best feature we ever introduced, but we’ll leave that for our clients to decide.
